The original concept of developing a Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP) was for the ICT Services of an organisation. Although in many cases this is still a prime requirement, it can often prove insufficient to protect the total organisation from failure or bankruptcy when a disaster occurs.
There are two major reasons why many companies are investing in business continuity management on a corporate wide basis. The first is the increased possibility of potentially catastrophic materialising risks, particularly those which are human-driven or environmental in nature. The second is the dependence on critical equipment and the limited time window available to contain and eliminate the materialising risks, should they occur.
The recent rapid growth of integrated information systems and the move to mobile and converging technologies has presented major vulnerability to organisations of all types and sizes. Moreover, the move towards a "paperless society", "green" environments and practices exacerbates the dependence of companies on their systems and a wide variety of critical equipment and resources. Thus, in many types of business, unattended materialising risk can effectively halt the business of the company in a matter of minutes.
Today, many critical business dependencies lie wholly outside the information technology and data processing functions. Loss of telecommunications; business models, strategies and plans residing on smart phones and tablet PCs bound to individual employees; key staff and skills; cabinets containing thousands of certificates, legal compliance documents, buildings containing product inventory; manufacturing equipment; workforce disruptions; and, disruptions and failures in national infrastructure could be catastrophic for many organisations.
